Alfold and Worthing United Match Reports

Steyning Town 3 Alfold FC 2
Steyning Town 4 Worthing United 1
Steyning Town mens first team continued their recent excellent run of form with 2 more wins in the space of 4 days making it a straight seven wins in a row. Much more of this and the club historian (ok we don’t have one) will be searching back much further in to the club records so we can see the last time we had such a run.
First up on Saturday was Alfold FC who have invested in a youth system and had had a tough start to the season. However Steyning certainly didnt have it all their own way as they were twice pinned back to 1-1 and 2-2 as Langford notched a brace, including an excellent second to make it 4 goals in 8 games. However the Town were relived as debutant Kit Goddard headed home a 96th minute winner from a Robinson knock back to keep the run going. The result was a bit harsh on the visitors who would have felt like there deserved something from the game but this Town team don’t know when to give up and have scored alot of late goals this season. The win moved them up to 4th in the table.
On Tuesday evening the Barrowmen had yet another home game as they hosted Worthing United in the Peter Bentley Cup. Town eventually ran out 4-1 winners however they certainly didn’t have it all their own way. They raced in to a 2 goal lead as they tore the visitors apart in the first 20 minutes. Goals from Bradley and Da Costa saw us well in command. However a mistake in midfield saw Warr pull one back for the visitors with a good finish midway through the first half. Worthing then missed a few half decent chances over the course of the evening as Steyning struggled to fully settle in to their passing game. However we did always feel we may have another gear, and when a raft of substitutions happened with 20 minutes to go we really got on top again. Young Dom Johnson-Fisher made the most of some tiring legs with two excellent solo goals to give the score line a more emphatic feel. Job done. In to the hat. Crowborough away in the next round
Next up for the lads is Saltdean away in the league on Sat 8th Oct and then Pagham FC at home in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday evening.
