Broadbridge Heath 2 Steyning Town 0
Tuesday night’s local derby away to Broadbridge Heath ended in disappointment for the Barrowmen with a 2-0 defeat.
We made the short trip up the A24 with our tails up from Saturday’s opening day 2-1 win at home to Newhaven and expecting a tough game against a Heath side fresh from a 1-0 win over Little Common at the weekend.
So, on a warm and muggy evening and on a lovely grass surface the match started at fast pace with the two sides testing each other out.
However, it was the home side who established control and after going close three times and a superb point-blank save by Lucas Stendell-Goeteke, on 25 minutes they took the lead when Bears frontman Marcus Doughty slipped our defence to place the ball wide of Lucas for 1-0.
We then spent much of the remainder of the first half hanging on with stout defending and good goalkeeping required to keep the galvanized home side at bay. Despite some strong running on the left from Charlie Meehan and good link up play with Max Howell we created very little and the closest we came before the break was when a Joe Radley-Martin freekick from just outside their box dipped over the cross bar.
Rob Clark and Jack Barnes were booked for a drag back and foul respectively.
Half time – Heath 1 Town 0
We started the second half looking to get back into the game with our frontmen Grant Radmore and Cal Chalmers making their presence more felt.
But the home side were still the more dominant and we spent a lot of time hanging on. It was a ‘topsy turvy’ half with some dubious refereeing decisions and all ten subs across both sides used.
Things got worse for us in the last ten minutes when Jack Barnes was dismissed (2nd yellow) for a foul and descent and in the ‘afters’ Radley-Martin was sin-binned also for descent, so we ended the match with just nine players on the pitch. In the final minute Bears striker Clark hit a low angled drive past Lucas to wrap up the points and the evening.
Not the best of performances by us and lessons need to be learned but it is early days and plenty to come. All credit to our hosts though. Looking ahead, on Saturday it is FA Cup Qualifying and for us a trip over to Eastbourne Town (KO @ the Saffrons 3pm). Please try and get over there to cheer on the lads as the road to Wembley begins!
