Crawley Down – Match Report

Crawley Down Gatwick FC 0 Steyning Town FC 1

Misty. Gloomy. Damp in the air. The onset of winter was definitely present as Steyning Town travelled over to old rivals Crawley Down Gatwick FC on Saturday.

A rather scrappy match, in front of a very healthy sized crowd, was full of chances at both ends and should probably have ended in a draw. That would’ve been a fair result. However, sometimes in football you’ve got to take a little bit of luck when it comes along and Steyning certainly did that on Saturday as they recorded their 8th consecutive league victory.

The key moment came just after the hour as Jazz Rance, stepped on to a cross that had been pulled back to the edge of the box, dinked past one defender and fired a lovely shot into the top left hand corner that went in off the bar. A moment of quality settling a tight match .

Over the 90 minutes the hosts had their fair share of chances, in fact they hit the woodwork twice, and Benfield in the Town goal made a two very good saves over the course of the afternoon.

At the other end, Alex Brewer had the best chances for the Barrowmen, especially in the first half, where two or three good opportunities were scorned, the best of those blazed over from 8 yards.

It was fair to say that Steyning edged the first half and the hosts probably edged the second half as the Barrowmen struggled to really get a foot hold in the game later on, choosing to sit a bit deeper and protect their slender lead.

In the end that moment of magic from Rance, an improving influence this season, was just enough to sneak off cheekily with the 3 points and continue a great run of results.

Well done lads. A well earned mid week rest this week as no midweek game for the first time this season
