Eastbourne United – Match Report

Steyning Town 1 Eastbourne United 0
The Barrowmen returned to the top of the SCFL Premier Division on Saturday care of a hard fought 1-0 win over Eastbourne United at the Birchwood Shooting Field. This was always going to be a tough battle against a side on the fringe of the play-offs challenge and with Newhaven only drawing 0-0 away to Pagham, Harry Shooman’s solitary goal on 80 minutes meant we went back to the top of the pile.
On a cold afternoon for late March the first half was somewhat of a stalemate. Both sides worked hard and tried to be creative, however both were also well organised and solid at the back so neither had an awful lot to show for their endeavour.
In the second half things pepped up a little more with Jack Barnes rallying things in midfield and some strong running from Lloyd Francis.
Substitutions meant some fresh legs enabled us to make more in roads and on 65 minutes Shooman shot tamely at the Lillywhites keeper after good work on the left from Mark Goldson.
On 80 minutes though, Shooman made amends by lobbing the ball over their keeper who was well off his line to find the back of the net.
We nearly doubled our lead when minutes later substitute Sam Remfrey hit a lovely curling shot from the edge of their box just wide of right.
Yes, job done, and a big hard fought win to put us back on top and keep the promotion dream alive & kicking!
Well done one & all!
Next up – on Tuesday evening we head over to the Beacon @ Hassocks for the Peter Bentley Cup semi versus Haywards Heath Town (KO 7:45pm).
On Easter Saturday we have an away fixture at Midhurst & Easebourne (KO @ Rotherfield 3pm)and on Easter Monday we have a morning fixture and a ‘local derby’ at Shoreham (KO @ Middle Road 11am).
