In amongst the 25 competitive games that Steyning town men’s first team have played this season we have made some pretty steady progress in various cup competitions and The FA Vase is no exception. As we host Eastbourne United in the second round of the competition today this is in fact the fourth game for us in the competition this season.
Our FA Vase campaign started on the 26th August when the sun was out (remember that) as we took on Oakwood FC at home. We ran out 4-1 winners on the day (eventually) with goals from Barnesy, Clarky and Meehan x2. We were rewarded, surprise surprise , with a home draw against a very talented Whyteleafe side who are making big ripples in the level below us in the Combined Counties league. A great first half performance saw us 4 up and the game won. Two late goals from our visitors gave the score a slightly more realistic look. Our goals on the day coming from Francis, Meehan, Rads and Shooman.
Yet again we were drawn at home on the 21st October as we took on Reading City. Again the damage was done in the first half with two cracking goals; a fine header by Shooey followed up by a fine finish in to the top corner from Meehan. Again there was a late consolidation for the visitors but no time left to play after that.
That win saw us in to the last 128 of the competition and a mere 6 wins from Wembley. This rounds visitors , Eastbourne United, we know and well and we expect a firm examination. We played away at the Oval a few weeks ago in the league and a late free kick from Rads salvaged a point for us in a really tough game.
All to play for as the competition starts to enter quite an exciting phase.
Without dreams we have nothing!
Up the Barrowmen!
