It’s a return to league action this week for the Barrownesses following a rare weekend off. Ashmount Leigh are the visitors to the PHMG.
Ashmount Leigh were formed in 2020 and this will be their final season under this name, merging with Crawley Down Gatwick FC for the 27/28 season. The move will bring together Crawley Down Gatwick’s growing girls section and Ashmount Leigh’s established Women’s programme, creating a clear pathway from youth to senior football.
They originally competed in the Surrey Women’s Premier division securing the league and league cup double in season 22/23. They went unbeaten in the league to secure promotion into the London & South East Regional Women’s Football League.
Their first season in Tier 6 saw them compete in the Northern Division securing safety comfortably with a 9th place finish.
Last season saw them move laterally to the Southern Division and face Steyning Town for the first time in league action. Previously the two sides competed twice in the league & once in the league cup.
In November the Barrownesses suffered a 2-0 league defeat at home. They then travelled to Meadowbank for the League Cup 3rd round, it was a day to forget for Steyning losing 3-0.
The return league fixture in April was a closer contest, 2 goals from the Barrownesses wasn’t enough, Ashmount scored 3 coming away with the victory and all 3 points.
Ashmount have made a very good start to this season. They have 2 victories and a draw in their first 4 league games. They currently sit in 2nd with 7 points.
They are exceptionally experienced and organised and will provide the home side with a tough test.
Kaz and her coaching team will once again be looking for a Barrownesses performance full of character, commitment and composure as they continue on their journey.
