Saltdean Match Report

Steyning Town 5 Saltdean United 1

Town did their automatic promotion prospects the power of good on Saturday with a 5-1 demolition of Saltdean at the Birchwood Shooting Field, and with Crowborough and Newhaven drawing 1-1 means we are now in a really strong position with our destiny very much in our own hands.

With a vocal crowd in attendance we started the match on the front foot and twice in the opening stages Mark Goldson was foiled at close range by the Saltdean keeper Jordan Hawkins.

We also had a good shout for a penalty waved away when Harry Shooman seemed to be fouled as he burst into their box, only for the visitors to break away and gain a free-kick on the edge of our box. This time it was Lucas who saved well.

However, on 23 minutes it was first blood to Saltdean when a sloppy pass in midfield enabled them to break away resulting in Tigers front man Damario slotting wide of Lucas to give them the lead.

The set back did not deter us though and we continued to press and on 34 minutes were level when Goldson nipped in to knock the ball past Hawkins for 1-1.

Right on half time we nearly went ahead when Hawkins saved spectacularly and Rob Clark followed up to hit the cross bar.

Half time 1-1

As the rain set in (as ever!) we started the second half still pressing but with the visitors coming at us on the break.

However, five minutes in a LLoyd Francis corner caused a bit of a scramble right in their goalmouth resulting in skipper Jack Barnes heading the ball home. 2-1.

Five minutes later it was 3-1 when Nathan Da Costa and Nathan Cooper combined to set up Shooman who absolutely leathered the ball into the top corner.

On 60 minutes another Francis corner was headed on by Shooman for Barnes to scissor kick wide of their keeper for four.

Barnes then nearly had a hat trick after a neat one-two with sub Lee Quincy.

With the last kick of the match Shooman bent in goal number five after being set up by Cooper.

Yes, a terrific win and with the other result going in our favour it is now teed up for a very exciting run-it with the ‘big one’ over at Newhaven next Saturday (KO @ Fort Rd 3pm).

Just two games left now, away to Newhaven next Saturday and home to Uckfield on Saturday 27th April (KO 3pm).

There is also the Peter Bentley Cup semi final v Haywards Heath Town now scheduled for 7.45pm on Tuesday 16th April at Hassocks FC. COYBM!!!
