Steyning Town 2 East Grinstead Town 3
Last Saturday’s home match with East Grinstead again ended in disappointment for the Barrowmen, with a 3-2 defeat.
Despite a spirited start with Charlie Meehan going close early on, mid way through the first half, two clinical goals from the visitors in a seven minute spell meant Town were chasing the game with a lot of work to do.
It took some good work from Nathan Stromberg Clarke to prevent the margin increasing more.
Towards the break though Steyning started to find themselves again, creating more, and just before half time Charlie Towning floated in a lovely free kick which eluded the Wasps keeper and dipped nicely under the crossbar to halve the deficit and restore some hope.
Half time – Town 1 East Grinstead 2
In the second half more good work from Nathan was again required to keep the scoreline down as Grinstead came on strong, but on sixty six minutes some slackness was punished when they grabbed a third goal.
The Barrowmen used the subs bench and and towards the end rallied well and on 80 minutes were awarded a penalty when Lloyd Francis was burst into their box and was brought down.
Skipper Jack Barnes stepped up to drill home the spot-kick.
The visitors held on though and returned to North Sussex with all three points.
Stromberg-Clarke with 2 yellow cards at the end was an unnecessary finish to events.
Again Town have to learn fast and pick themselves up.
Next up – On Tuesday night Town go again when we entertain in-form Ramsgate, who will be making the long mid-week journey over from East Kent (KO @ Birchwood Stadium 7:45pm).
And, next Saturday they have another local derby when we make the short trip over to Burgess Hill (KO @ the Home Call Carpets Community Stadium 3pm).
