STCFC 3 – Horsham YMCA 1
The Barrowmen kicked off 2023 with a comfortable victory over Horsham YMCA on Monday. Despite conceding an early goal, as they had done against Hassocks on Boxing Day, they got in to their stride pretty quickly and controlled the game for long periods. First half goals from Jack Potten and Jack Barnes saw Steyning go in to the break 2-1 up and a fine solo effort from Dom Johnson-Fisher early in the second half wrapped up the 3 points. There was a late rally from YM where Bignall rattled the post and ex Town striker Ben Bacon lobbed over but during the second period it never really felt the visitors were going to snatch anything out of the game.
Kev Green made a few changes to the side that started at Hassocks. Langford was back in for his first start for 6 weeks after injury and Jack Potten returned after suspension. Geal also returned to the midfield. Clark, Robinson and Downer, all starters at Hassocks, dropped to the bench.
YM were quickest out of the blocks and it was no great surprise when Rice fired them ahead on 3 minutes, spinning and firing an excellent strike on the half volley that whistled past Lucas in the Town goal. This seemed to prompt Town in to action (not for the first time this season). Whereas at Hassocks it took 45 mins to get going it was only 15 minutes here. Jeal in the YM goal was suddenly very busy, dealing well with a succession of corners and denying Langford one on one with a good save. However he was finally beaten on the half hour as a corner was recycled back out to Barnes and his deep cross from the right was met at the far post by centre back Potten with a good downward header in off the post.
After this Town kept coming forward and forced another succession of corners which came to nothing and squandered a host of good half chances with wayward finishing. Just as it seemed we were heading at HT all square that man Barnes cut in to the box from the right and fired a low hard shot that squirmed under Jeal in to the net; and shot he would feel he should have saved. Towns tails were up!
Steyning started the second half on the front foot and Dom Johnson-Fisher soon settled any nerves surrounding the outcome of the game as he cut in from the right, beating 2 defenders and driving a fine finish high in to the net to add to his array of excellent strikes this season. The third goal seemed to kill the content off a bit in all honesty. Steyning were content to play their patient passing game and kept possession well, and YM kept at the task looking to break at speed where possible. Langford spurned a decent chance when racing through on goal and Johnson-Fisher was a toe poke away from a cross two yards out. Later on Bacon and Bignall as mentioned both went close for the visitors but it was Steyning who saw the game out to claim the 3 points in front of a crowd of 137.
